This chapter focuses on the flagship publication of the US-sponsored Union Press. The influential Chinese Student Weekly allows us to gain insight into the ways liberal émigré intellectuals grappled with Cold War antagonism. It also provide us opportunity to explore from ground up the extent and nature of American Cold War intervention in Asia, and the related question of whether the émigré group had agency of their own in the propaganda warfare. The secret involvement in the weekly magazine’s cross-regional and transnational expansion of influences also sheds important light on the ways in which global ideological confrontations intertwined and overlapped with local historical imperatives in shaping the development of Hong Kong into the regional hub of Chinese-language cultural production. |
