Popis: | tute (IRRI) in Los Bafios, Philippines (see box). IR8 was a progeny of a 1962 hybridization of Dee-geo-woo-gen (DGWG), a stiff-strawed Chinese dwarf rice, and Peta, a tall but vigorous Indonesian variety. Farmers rapidly adopted IR8, particularly in the irrigated regions of Asia, because of its high yield potential, lodging resistance, fertilizer response, and insensitivity to daylength. IR8 soon became popularly, if inaccurately, known as the "miracle rice"--the most widely grown variety on earth. |
