Popis: Introduction Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in women. Survival of these patients has increased due to newer therapeutic methods. Lymphedema is the most important complication of treatment in breast cancer which has a great effect on quality of life. There is no curative treatment for lymphedema; therefore, prevention is the best option. In this study, we determine the incidence and risk factors of lymphedema (including age, sex, BMI, smoking, surgical technique, number of removed axillary nodes, stage and grade of cancer, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, radiotherapy and physiotherapy) after mastectomy. Material and method This is a prospective study in which 100 women who had breast cancer underwent mastectomy were examined for occurrence and progression of arm lymphedema in frequent visits during 14 months period. Patients were considered as having lymphedema if the difference between the circumferences of the two arms was more than 1cm. Results 44% of patients developed lymphedema. Among all of the above factors, only radiotherapy had significant relationship with lymphedema. Conclusion High proportion of patients underwent mastectomy will develop lymphedema so it is necessary to pay more attention to this subject and radiotherapy can increase the risk of lymphedema.
