Publisher Summary The chapter describes the approach pursued by Winrock International, a nonprofit organization, on the deployment of renewable energy technology in the countryside of Brazil. Winrock's main activities focuses on helping the country to shape an energy policy that is supportive of renewable energy. One major area of action has been the collaboration with PRODEEM—Brazil's most important program of rural electrification based on RE—both by participating actively in the program's restructuring effort and providing it exemplary projects within a NGO network that receives technical and managerial support. Another area has been the interaction with the Electric Energy Regulatory Agency ANEEL to allow RE conquers its niches in the new private power environment. In parallel, Winrock is working together with other actors like state energy ministries, rural electrification cooperatives, NGOs, and the private sector to identify opportunities where RE proves to be the least cost solution. |
