The object of this paper is to discuss an issue that has been gradually gaining momentum in the world of CD‐ROM over the last couple of years — that of the chances of implementing a standard user interface for CD‐ROM applications. Firstly, we will look at whether or not there really is a need for a standard user interface, from the points of view of the users, the disc publishers and the software vendors. Subsequently, we will investigate the pros and cons of two possible solutions to the user interface dilemma. One of these involves the implementation of currently‐available de facto standards, and the other is a software concept. For this second possible solution, we will also look at how far developments have come and at the groups in the CD‐ROM industry which are currently working on the issue. |
