Oxygenic photosynthetic microalgae are the valuable renewable feedstocks that can convert sun’s visible spectrum into stored energy in the form of biomass. Algal biomass is rich in lipid and carbohydrates which require specific processes to convert it into end products like biofuel(s) and by-products. Integration of biological, engineering and downstream processes needs to be well orchestrated for successful commercial scale production of algal-based products. To achieve high algal biomass production and effective downstream processing, different modes of algal growth and their cultivation practices, harvesting and subsequent dewatering challenges should be addressed. To produce bioethanol, biogas, bio-oil and biohydrogen from wet and dry algal biomass, different types of pretreatment, fermentation techniques with future prospects are explained in detail. |
