An approach to the design of the Savonius rotor based wind energy operated irrigation system is described with appropriate references cited for further details. In the beginning, results of the extensive wind tunnel test program are presented which assess parametric influence and arrive at an optimum con figuration. This is followed by typical results with a prototype during field tests to help evaluate effectiveness of the design. Finally, a numerical analysis of the associated aerodynamics using the boundary element method is undertaken. A flow visualization study complemented the test program. Results suggest that power coefficient of the optimized configuration can be as high as 0.32. Capability to self-start at a relatively low speed, high efficiency, and simple economic design makes the system quite attractive. |
