The I/V characteristics of polycrystalline CdS under illumination in an aqueous basic solution are improved after photoetching by cysteine. These improvements are not correlated to changes in the morphology of the CdS surface nor to incorporation of cysteine into the CdS lattice as evidenced by XPS and SEM. It is shown by photoelectrochemical studies as a function of cysteine concentration and pH, that the photoelectrochemical improvements originate most probably from photooxidation of the illuminated CdS in contact with H2O/OH− since improvements occur also, in certain experimental conditions, in a basic aqueous solution, however to a lesser extent than with cysteine. The principal role of cysteine is to enhance the favorable photoelectrochemical changes because this reductant prevents the electrode blocking by the S° from CdS decomposition. An understanding of the origin of the favorable photoelectrochemical modifications is attempted. |
