The auto-crash emergency locator in a vehicle will be helpful in the event of an automobile accident to detect the crash location and send a message to notify the appropriate authorities. Arduino Uno microcontroller which is the ATMega 328P microcontroller serves as the central processing unit for the system and coordinates instruction flow within the other components that make up the device. The other components used in the implementation of this system are the vibration sensor module which detects the crash location due to the change in velocity or sudden shock and this is the trigger for the GPS receiver. The GPS receiver retrieves the GPS coordinates from the satellite and sends this information as well as other preprogrammed information to the GSM module. This sends an SMS automatically which contains the GPS coordinates and other information including the color of the car, the car’s brand and the registered plate number among other things. From the testing of the device, the auto-crash emergency locator has an SMS send-time of 15 to 20 seconds and GPS time-to-first-fix of 15 to 30 seconds and the GPS accuracy of less than 100 meters. This system will also find application in other areas such as the vehicle tracking in cases of theft and package tracking for a delivery system. |
