This chapter explores the implications of the ever-expanding marine economy’s reliance on a safe marine transportation system and then examines the global network of marine weather service providers and the observations that underpin their safety of life and property forecasts and warning services. It looks at the current and near-future state of collecting and analyzing marine observations from sea and space as well as the opportunities to translate those observations into improved marine services. It then takes a critical look at the outdated methods used to transmit and convey this important life and cargo saving information and then highlights novel capabilities under development that could transform the way hazardous weather warnings are disseminated, received, and acted upon by the mariners. Finally, it postulates a state-of-the-possible in regard to a rapid-refresh, high-resolution, fully coupled marine forecasting system that, along with other improvements, could propel a viable new blue economy well into the future with increased safety of life and property at sea, reduced economic losses, and even increased sustainability. |
