Just Transition has become a buzzword in the Canadian labour circles, referring to the set of policies that support workers and communities directly affected by the transition to a low-carbon economy. The majority of labour groups have maintained a ‘worker-focused’ approach to Just Transition, while other groups like the 15&Fairness campaign in Ontario are increasingly putting forward a ‘societal shift’ approach that builds alliances with environmental, indigenous and community movements. The Canadian Pact for a Green New Deal provided the opportunity to combine these two approaches in a common project for workers and communities. The challenges presented in the Pact for a Green New Deal are representative of a broader challenge for labour, community, indigenous and environmental movements: acting on a common project that addresses inequalities. |
