Popis: Implementation of bulky, high-fiber diets to delay early growth in broilers is limited by the availability of a suitable low-cost diluent. Two experiments examined the use of defatted rice bran (DRB) as a low energy diluent for use in delaying the early growth rate of broilers. Levels of up to 60% DRB were used in diets fed beginning at 3 or 7 days of age and fed for 7 or 14 days. After a period of DRB feeding, birds received diets varying in energy content to market weights at 49 or 56 days of age. Inclusion of high levels of DRB resulted in significant reduction of body weights at 21 day; at 49 or 56 days of age there were no significant differences in body weight related to early growth restriction. Initiation of DRB restriction at 3 vs. 7 days had no significant effect on live performance; however, birds fed the DRB diets for 14 days were smaller than those fed the DRB diets for 7 days. Dietary treatments did not consistently affect the incidence of mortality. The effect of imposing early nutrient restriction through using DRB under environment and managerial conditions conducive to development of ascites is yet to be determined.
