Surgery is inherently associated with risk for the patient and the staff treating the patient. Indeed without any surgery, risk is not absent either. In many cases, surgery is aimed at reducing the risk of an adverse outcome for the patient. The notion of systems to reduce operations on the wrong patient, side, or site is discussed. The legal ramifications of surgery are outlined in this chapter to discuss some of the facets of “surgical risk” and the principles of reducing risk. Negligence, the “informed consent” process, and reporting of death to the coroner are also explored. For associated aspects, refer to other relevant chapters and volumes. |
