This study reports the synthesis and characterization of Cu-poor/Zn-rich CZTS as a function of sulphur content in order to improve the homogeneity and the quality in CZTS film formation. The absorber layers were produced using a two-stage process. The first stage involved the sputter deposition of metallic Cu-Zn-Sn precursors followed by the evaporation of a sulphur capping film. The second stage involved the conversion of the precursor stacks to the kesterite absorber layer by heating the samples in a tube furnace under argon ambient. Scanning Electron Microscopy together with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy was used to determine composition and morphology, whilst phase characterization was carried out using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray Diffraction. Finally, photo-electrochemical External Quantum Efficiency measurements were used to characterize the optoelectronic response of the samples. The paper will show that the kesterite formation, its composition and the uniformity of the conversion are strongly dependent on the sulphur location, sulphur quantity and the internal geometry of the graphite box used to contain the samples during conversion.
