This introduction provides an overview of relations between literature and music in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It begins with the representation in literature of music and the musical setting of works of literature. It then considers three of the defining developments of the period: the turn from music to sound, the dominance of pop music, and the profound effect of technology on the production, dissemination and reception of music.
