In this chapter, I provide a detailed narrative on the lives of the Martinez family as they transitioned to life in Canada over a nine-month period after fleeing Colombia. Fernando is a pediatric surgeon, his wife is an accountant, and their two children are in middle school and high school. In this chapter, I use the exact words of family members who tell us about their experiences on a range of issues in great detail, including frustrations in gaining employment and licensure (for Fernando), dealing with various types of discrimination (in the workplace, in the classroom, with school policies), and with their experiences in ESL classes. The interviews were conducted in Spanish and later transcribed into English. |
