Popis: We develop our essay on reading from two principal directions: (a) the art of reading to cover ‘subjective’ perspectives on reading; and (b) the science of reading to analyse and discuss all that is considered ‘objective’. We develop theoretical and empirical arguments towards a principal hypothesis that reading collateral or side-stream material accentuates the understanding of subsequent reading of mainstream material. This intuitively plausible hypothesis is examined from various perspectives drawing upon extant theories from linguistics, cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience and computational modelling. In our discourse, we consider the input text material to belong to the dichotomous classes of ‘general material’ and ‘academic (or specialized) material’. We discuss the potential of certain reading experiments with participants from a student population.
