Popis: | Morphological studies on the insoluble organic material present in the oldest known sediment—the Onverwacht Series Chert of Swaziland (3.4–3.7×109 years old)—and in the Orgueil (Type I carbonaceous chondrite) and Murray (Type II) meteorite were examined in the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Co. ‘Stereoscan’. The presence and significance of preserved micro-organisms in the Onverwacht Chert and ‘box-like’ structures in the meteorite are discussed. These studies illustrate the importance and advantages of examining Pre-cambrian and Meteorite organic residues from both a morphological and chemical viewpoint in order to obtain a more meaningful understanding of these possible early biotic and/or abiotic systems |
