The steroid β-d-glucosidase of rabbit liver has been purified to electrophoretic homogeneity and its molecular weight estimated by comparison of its behavior with that of standard proteins on electrophoresis and on gel filtration. The values obtained by the two methods were 51,300 and 58,000, respectively. Detailed studies of the hydrolysis of glucosides of phenolic and of alcoholic steroid hydroxyl groups, and of p-nitrophenylglucoside, indicate that one enzyme, contained in the nonsedimentable fraction of the cell, is responsible for the hydrolysis of all these glucosides. |
