Chemical-induced central nervous system (CNS) damage may result in a wide variety of neurologic and psychiatric effects, ranging from subtle behavioral disturbances to severe coma and death. Neurodegenerative diseases include a wide spectrum of disorders characterized by chronic loss of selected and functionally related groups of neurons within the CNS. The ability of the CNS to recover functionally from irreversible structural damage can be accounted for by redundancy of nerve cells involved in certain functions, or the recruitment of other neurons. Cases of manifest chronic Hg poisoning are currently rare, however, the possible CNS effects of long-term, low-level exposure are a source of concern. Acute solvent exposure is typically associated with manifestations of CNS disturbance. The abusers described in these studies had inhaled glues, spray lacquer, or spray paint containing some solvents, of which toluene was considered the main cause of the CNS damage. |
