Popis: | The frontal infraocclusion - commonly denominated as open bite - is a feature in several types of dysgnathia, which are difficult to treat. Two causal mechanisms are underlying, that is hereditary skeletal disorders between maxilla and mandible, and orofacial dyskinesia of intraorale and extraoral muscles. The combination of both factors leads to difficulties during orthodontic treatment. Especially in the finishing phase of orthodontics, relapse might occur due to persistent orofacial dysfunctions. Swallowing patterns that cannot be influenced by will are playing a major role during the relapse process. This article presents an overview of differential diagnosis and therapy in case of frontal infraocclusion, and discusses the role of orofacial dysfunction by clinical examples. Despite the proven efficiency of myofunctional therapy it is not possible to develop a universal guideline for a standardized therapeutic concept in case of open bite. |
