Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are pentameric integral membrane proteins made up from 1-4 different subunits. Traditionally classified into “muscle type” and “neuronal type”, it is now clear that only the expression of muscle nAChRs is indeed largely confined to muscle tissue (and degenerated muscle, such as fish electric tissue) whereas the expression of neuronal nAChRs is found also outside of nervous systems, for instance, in skin keratinocytes, bronchial epithelial cells and vascular endothelial cells, thymus cells and lymphocytes, and in embryonic and denervated muscle. |
