Popis: The ceramic strength is shown to increase with decrease in porosity and decrease in grain size of polycrystals. In sintering, the material porosity decreases and the grain size increases. A relation between the ceramic strength and the kinetic parameters of sintering is established. A general relationship for the strength σ as a function of the relative porosity Z is derived. The σ versus Z relationship exhibits a maximum whose location is determined by the ratio of the densification and grain-growth rates and by the mechanism of ceramic fracture. A comprehensive study of structural evolution of the ceramic and its strength analysis provide an insight into the mechanisms of sintering and fracture, which allows a deterministic modeling to be applied to the technology of structural and refractory ceramics.
