Popis: The formation of colloidal particles in the quantum-size regime (25 to 200 A) have been reported for eight semiconductors with layered structures. These are HgI2, BiI3, PbI2, Bi2S3 Sb2S3, MoS2, WSe2 and WS2. These quantized colloids have been prepared by simple reaction of the appropriate metal cations with anions in aqueous and non-aqueous solutions, dissolution of bulk material with sonication and/or heat, and dissolution of bulk material that has been first intercalated with lithium. For colloids prepared by simple reactions of cations and anions, many experiments are required to separate the effects of potential molecular and ionic complexes from those produced by the quantized particles. Potential applications of quantized semiconductor particles with layered structures in photocatalysis, photoconversion, and non-linear optics have not yet been explored.
