Popis: This article describes the results of an investigation of the effect of the purity of argon on the long-term strength of low-carbon steel at elevated temperatures in tests of 500 hr duration. The long-term strength of steel at 400° C increases with decreasing purity of argon. At higher test temperatures (600–800° C) the effect of the purity of argon becomes less pronounced. The results of tests in argon were compared with the results of tests carried out in vacuum at various levels of evacuation.
