Physician assistant (PA) students are increasingly interested in the opportunity to participate in an international clinical rotation. As a result, more PA programs are integrating such activities into the curriculum. International rotations benefit the program through global education, research, and service projects and the student by increasing their awareness of the cultural, social, political, and economic impacts on health for diverse populations. When developing such rotations, programs must adhere to the ARC-PA standards for the clinical year and be aware of increased concerns for the safety of students when traveling abroad. The Physician Assistant Education Association International Affairs Committee has developed guidelines for international rotations and student selection criteria. There are specific issues concerning student involvement in international or national disaster relief that must be considered prior to student participation in such activities. Overall, international rotations can be of value to PA students and programs, provided careful planning and outcome assessment is completed. |
