Popis: | Recent excavations in African slave contexts at Brimstone Hill, St Kitts, West Indies have produced well preserved animal bones. These faunal remains suggest that African slaves were provisioned with imported salt beef and pork as well as locally raised sheep and goats. Slave craftsmen appear to have manufactured numerous single-hole bone discs that probably served as cores for cloth covered buttons. Bones from sea turtle carapaces and cattle ribs and scapulae were utilized in button core production. |
