Popis: | Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy shows that sulfonic acids can adsorb on aluminum oxide as oriented sulfonates. The sulfonates are ionically bonded to the oxide in a tripod configuration with the three sulfonate oxygen atoms based in nearly equivalent positions. This tripod can be used to orient other functional groups perpendicular to the oxide. Vibrational spectra of methanesulfonate (CH3SO−3), trifluoromethanesulfonate (CF3SO−3), and benzenesulfonate (C6H5SO−3) are presented and compared to infrared, Raman, and other tunneling data. |
