Manuel Castells Olivan is a highly cited sociologist born in 1942 in Hellin (Albacete), Spain. He began his academic training in Spain, but left for political reasons in the 1960s and continued his very active life and higher education in Paris. In 1979 he began to develop his academic career in the United States at Berkeley and other universities. His scholarly contributions are in the field of urban sociology and, from the beginning of the 1990s, in globalization and information and communication technologies. His work can be characterized as situated within the context of praxis, downplaying disciplinary scholarly development and focusing more on the identification of social and cultural inequities, and solutions to those inequities. |
