Crohn’s disease is characterized by inflammatory, fistulizing, or stricturing behavior. In up to 30% of patients, fistulizing disease can occur that may result in the formation of an intraabdominal abscess. Significant improvements in percutaneous drainage techniques with technical success rates approaching 90% have led to a strong preference for initial treatment of abscesses with percutaneous drainage and antibiotics. This approach allows for the resolution of acute infection, control of inflammation, and medical stabilization. The decision on how to manage patients following successful drainage of an abscess remains controversial. |
