Genesis of selected sandy soils in Alberta, Canada as revealed by microfabric, leachate- and soil composition

Popis: Micromorphology and lysimeter studies were used to evaluate the nature and formation of the microstructures of some sandy soils in Alberta (Canada). The microstructures vary from monic or orthogranic (grains uncoated) related distribution pattern (RDP) in the Ae horizons, to chitonic or chlamydic RDP (grains fully or partially coated) in the matrix of the B horizons, and to porphyric RDP (grains embedded in fine mass) in the nodules of the B horizons. The various genetic transport processes are interpreted to be podzolization, including the eluviation of organic matter and organometallic complexes of Al and Fe, lessivage, or the mobilization of phyllosilicates, particulate Fe oxides, quartz and feldspar, and possibly oxidation-reduction processes accountable for the movement of Fe2+. There are indications in the study that iron oxides like goethite and ferrihydrite are active in the adsorption of organic matter and organo-metallic complexes. Colloidal minerals in the leachates include globular ferrihydrite, goethite, opal, phyllosilicates and very fine quartz, Chrysophycean stomatocysts, and possibly amorphous aluminous materials.
