Suomi-NPP Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) nighttime light composite data have been released in early 2013. This imagery is applicable for studying about night phenomena, such as light pollution estimation, urban growth, or electricity consumption estimation. This research aims to determine correlation between artificial nighttime light and built-up area in Central Java and Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Artificial nighttime light was estimated by VIIRS imagery and built-up area was detected by Landsat 8 OLI. Both of VIIRS and Landsat 8 OLI images were corrected both radiometrically and geometrically. The corrected VIIRS images show artificial nighttime light of the research areas, while Normalized Built-Up Area Index (NDBI) and Urban Index (UI) were used to extract built-up areas from Landsat 8 OLI. We used Spearman rank correlation (Spearman‘s rho (p)) as a statistical method to determine the correlation of artificial nighttime light and built-up areas. The correlation test using Spearman's p is significant at the 0.01 level with one-tailed between NDBI-VIIRS imagery of 0.63 and UI-VIIRS imagery of 0.69. These values indicate strong correlation between these parameters. Scatter plot analysis of UI-VIIRS and NDBI-VIIRS result in monotonic functions. This research indicates that built-up areas and artificial nighttime light (ANTL) has positive correlation. |
