The human gastrointestinal (GI) tract contains bacterial communities that are diverse and complex. The intestinal microbiota plays an important role in digestion and production of essential vitamins and protects the GI tract from pathogen colonization. This chapter provides a review of: (1) the concept of intestinal microbiota, (2) the methodologies used to investigate the intestinal microbiota and their limitations, (3) the influence of diet on intestinal microbiota, and (4) future directions in the field. |
