Popis: | The psychological distress, parenting competence, and perceptions of child's social competence were examined in mothers of children with spina bifida. Comparisons were made to the normative values for each measure, as well as between a subset of ratings given by mothers and fathers. The influence of medical severity on adaptation was also explored. Mothers of children with spina bifida reported lower levels of social skills in their children compared to normative values. However, the levels of social skills reported still fell within the normal range of functioning. Greater effectiveness as a parent and less distress were found for study mothers in comparison to a normative group and to fathers, respectively. Finally, more behavior problems were reported for children with mild versus moderate spina bifida. The overall positive adaptation of mothers of children with spina bifida is discussed. |
