Popis:	This study argues that our society is in the midst of a remarkable revolution triggered by biological and microprocessor-related research and development. It then focuses on the impact this revolution is having on the field of operations research as microprocessor performance improves and microprocessor price and size decrease. Examples such as the design and operation of cable TV systems, computer networks and intelligent buildings illustrate this impact and point towards a host of new and extremely challenging optimization problems for operations researchers to study.
