1. Studies were conducted with radioactive phosphorus (P32) on the rate of translocation of phosphorus in the wheat plant and its distribution in the wheat kernel. 2. Evidence was obtained that P32 moved in the transpiration stream directly into the upper part of the plant and likely directly into the head. Movement was at the rate of at least 64 cm. an hour in the plants which were physiologically active. 3. No P32 was taken up by the kernels after they were ripe. 4. There was a differential distribution of P32 in the kernel. The deposition at a late stage of maturation was heaviest immediately below the crease and in the embryo and was definitely less in the endosperm, with the bran layers occupying an intermediate position. The endosperm showed a rather uniform concentration at all stages, except for a somewhat heavier concentration in the early stages. The bran layer, considered to include the aleurone layer, had a much greater concentration at the early stages of development. |
