Popis: Summary The desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria Forskal) is the insect most (eared by fanners in the countries affected. These locusts can nullify many years of work by farmers, put a heavy strain on the budgets of countries affected and sometimes cause enormous environmental damage. In the course of the last decade, two locust invasions occurred, three years apart, which is a very short interval compared with the long remission period which preceded the 1985–1989 invasion. This chain of events made necessary the rapid implementation of a locust control strategy capable of ensuring freedom from this pest in the long term. This chapter, while seeking to point out the different factors which have favoured the locust outbreaks, will propose a global strategy to control the desert locust, integrating both operational and structural approaches, In addition, several activities will be suggested, which are intended to establish the strategy proposed (preventive control) and to make it effective.
