Numerical Investigation of Turbulent Natural Convection in Differentially Heated Square Cavities

Popis: This paper deals with the numerical simulation of turbulent natural convection in cavities heated from the side. Three cases are considered: an air‐filled square cavity of size 0.75 m, a water‐filled cavity of the same size, and a 20 times larger water‐filled cavity. The Rayleigh numbers of these applications reach from 1.46⋅109 to 2.77⋅1015. For the air‐filled cavity, the results are validated by comparison with experimental data from Tian & Karayiannis [1]. In addition, the investigations have the practical background to provide support for improving temperature measurements of liquids in large storage tanks.
