Popis: Albufeira is a coastal holiday resort in the Algarve of Portugal. It has a municipality potable water supply and sewage disposal system. The public health surveillance is under the jurisdiction of the Algarve Health Department. It is a popular holiday both with Portuguese tourists and tourists from Britain and Scandinavia. Holiday accommodation is mainly in hotels and time share apartments. Most of the British tourists travel with a package tour operator. In the latter part of the summer season 1983, tour operators reported an increased number of clients with diarrhoea. Concern was expressed about the quality and availability of potable water. The incidence of travelers’ diarrhoea returned to the norm for the resort at the end of 1983 and was not raised in the early part of the summer season 1984. An explosive outbreak of gastroenteritis occurred in August 1984 and the outbreak was investigated by the Algarve Health Department with the assistance of a British microbiologist and epidemiologist.
