As regards honours and appreciation, the Austrian cultural establishment has been pretty unforthcoming, not to say mean, towards that eminent Austrian composer, Friedrich Cerha, whose fame is international and whose services to Austrian music have been quite outstanding. But we want him to know how greatly the unofficial music world honours him, in Austria and the whole of Europe, and that numerous friends esteem and love him and fully appreciate his achievements as a composer, conductor, teacher and human being. For almost thirty years I have felt linked to Fritz Cerha not merely by friendship, admiration of his personality and his music, but also by deep gratitude for all that he has done for my own work. Over and above which there has been, and still is, the constant exchange of ideas and aesthetic judgments between us. |
