Satellite direct broadcasting, more commonly called direct readout service, is used to distribute “raw” or minimally preprocessed satellite data to anyone anywhere in the world in real or near-real time. Remotely sensed data are transmitted directly from polar orbiting or geostationary satellites to ground stations within signal range of the satellite. The services are Automatic Picture Transmission (APT), High Resolution Picture Transmission (HRPT), and Direct Sounder Broadcasts (DSB) from POES annd Weather Facsimile (WEFAX), Visible Infrared Spin Scan Radiometer (VISSR), and VISSR Atmospheric Sounder (VAS) data transmissions from GOES. Satellite collection of data from rmeote platforms is treated separately. |
