PHRENICO-EXERESIS WITH EXTRACTION OF THIRTY-TWO AND FIVE-TENTHS CENTIMETERS OF THE LEFT PHRENIC NERVE

Popis: The operation of phrenic avulsion, or phrenico-exeresis, is fairly common in certain thoracic diseases in which paralysis of one segment of the diaphragm with consequent compression of the corresponding lung is desired. The case reported here is of interest because of the satisfactory results obtained by this operation, and particularly because of the relatively easy extraction of the entire distal portion of the left phrenic nerve with its accessory nerves and diaphragmatic branches. REPORT OF CASE Miss E. C. D., a white woman, aged 38, had had pulmonary tuberculosis since November, 1917. The entire left lung was affected, and the apex of the right lung down to the level of the third rib. The patient had had the customary home and sanatorium treatment with some improvement in the disease in the right lung and none in that of the left. In June, 1925, she was referred to me by Dr.
