Legislation requiring strict control of emissions from motor vehicles is in force in the USA and Japan and is being introduced progressively in Europe. The regulations limit emissions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides from gasoline and diesel engines and, in the USA, particulates from diesel engines. Although these regulations refer to ‘total hydrocarbons’, it is known that this encompasses a broad range of species from simple molecules such as methane to high molecular weight polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. The carcinogenic activity of certain polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons is well characterised and has been a matter of concern in the USA where polynuclear aromatic emissions have been identified in the raw exhaust of gasoline vehicles running on 91 octane lead free fuel and also in the exhaust of diesel vehicles. |
