Summary The gastroscope could not be insinuated beyond the cardia on repeated attempts in 26 of 900 consecutive examinations. On 24 occasions it was possible to ascertain the cause for the failure. The chief causes were, 1) mechanical blockage, and, 2) failure of the esophagus to accommodate itself to the relatively rigid gastroscope. Extra-gastrointestinal factors interfered with passage of the gastroscope beyond the cardia more frequently than those originating within the organs of the alimentary canal. Repeated failure to pass the instrument into the stomach should be viewed as strong evidence of an abnormality which should be clarified by other diagnostic methods. |
