Popis: A fundamentally important task of all eucaryotic cells is to direct proteins to their final intra-or extracellular location. A cytoplasmic component, the signal recognition particle (SRP), plays a key role in one of these sorting processes. It recognizes secretory, lysosomal and membrane proteins and efficiently targets them to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The ER is the first and common subcellular compartment in the localization pathway of these proteins. SRP consists of 6 polypeptides and 1 RNA molecule (Walter and Blobel, 1982) and belongs therefore to a group of cellular components that are called ribonucleoproteins.
