Popis: Automation of Label Placement Lettering is of prime importance for maps, but positioning is a time-consuming process. The automation of name placement has thus become the subject of much research. However, most results, on either point or linear features, fail to comply with the strict quality requirements of the production of topographic maps. The COGIT laboratory has been working on this issue for five years, tackling first the full automation of the placement of horizontal names [Lecordix et al 94] and of the placement of administrative road labels [Barrault 95]. The two main steps of the process are 1/the computation of a set of possible positions for any feature's label (in an efficient research space, the cartographic quality is quantified by significant parameters) and 2/the selection of each name's final position so that overlappings are avoided: a cost function that includes the cartographic quality of each candidate position is minimized by simulated annealing.
