Popis: | The relationships between the fibrinolytic system and changing hormone levels, due to ageing and menopausal status, were investigated in 1140 healthy participants of a large scale, epidemiological study. Tissue plasminogen activator and euglobulin fibrinolysis activity were found to decrease with age and after the onset of menopause, whereas plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 increased. The latter variable also showed a significant negative correlation to human growth hormone. The lower fibrinolytic activity of older men and postmenopausal women is in accordance with their higher coronary risk. |
