Popis: Corynebacterium bacilli found in blood cultures are usually attributed to contamination. They are rarely accepted as causative agents of septicemia or subacute bacterial endocarditis. Two cases of subacute bacterial endocarditis caused by Corynebacterium are presented. The first patient was a 10-year-old boy, without known previous heart disease, and the second, a 5-year-old girl with a patent ductus. Both had clear clinical and laboratory findings of subacute bacterial endocarditis. In both cases Corynebacteria were isolated on several occasions. The bacteriological characteristics of both strains dis not enable us to classify them according to the nomenclature of Bergey. The strains were sensitive to several antibiotics. The children responded well to the antibiotic treatment. As diphtheroids were not mentioned in several large surveys of subacute bacterial endocarditis, they seem to be a rare etiologic agent of this disease.
