Popis: Khrushchev travelled to Moscow alone in September 1929; Nina Petrovna remained in Stalino until the following summer, looking after their newborn daughter Rada, and her stepchildren, Leonid and Iuliia.2 Khrushchev’s first task in Moscow was to win admission to the Industrial Academy, which was reluctant to take him on account of his poor educational background. On his first approaches he was told that he was not ready for the course there and would be better off to enrol in the Central Committee’s course in Marxism-Leninism. Khrushchev, however, was determined to enter the academy and turned for help to Kaganovich, then a Secretary of the Central Committee. With Kaganovich’s assistance, he won admission to the academy and took up residence in a nearby dormitory.3
