This paper summarizes some of the research carried out in the Geul valley over the past 10 years. The scientific work done included amongst others a hydrological study focusing on discharge regime change, a soil study aimed at mapping pollution patterns and a study into the health risks of children exposed to enhanced lead concentrations. This work has largely contributed to our understanding of some of the processes and phenomena, interacting both in space and time, that govern the cycling of heavy metals in this fluvial environment. On the basis of this knowledge it is strongly felt that control measures to reduce the risks encountered can only be successful in the long term when they are accompanied by measures to eliminate the active sources of heavy metals. Therefore a plea for integral water management is made. |
